How DNA Testing Works

Select Your Location

DNA Paternity testing is performed at the six LabXpress locations in Phoenix. No appointments or doctor’s orders are required. Walk-ins welcome. 

Arrive to the Lab

Enter the lab and check-in at the front desk. If you are receiving a legal DNA test, present a valid government issued ID. Informational tests do not require IDs. 

A lab tech will perform your test shortly.

Receive Results

Paternity test results will be emailed to the alleged father only unless a form is signed to release the results to another party. Notarized copies of the results for legal DNA tests can be picked up at our Downtown Phoenix location.  

Depending on the volume of tests being performed that day, this can take as little as 5 – 7 days. Ask for the test turn around times at the time of your visit.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions and answers about DNA Paternity Testing

Yes. Only the person tested, and anyone they approve, will receive results. All DNA samples are destroyed after being tested.

DNA samples are typically collected from participating individuals using a soft swab resembling a long Q-tip. The swab is gently rubbed on the inside of the cheek to collect skin cells, which contain DNA. Other samples can include toothbrush, hair, nails, ear wax, etc., for Informational testing only. Legal testing requires both parties to be swabbed by a technician.

The accuracy of paternity and DNA tests is 99.99%. The outcomes are based on statistical calculations, and will be presented as a likelihood of paternity or relatedness, depending on the type of familial relationship you are attempting to determine. The Informational Paternity Test is solely for informational purposes, and does not require formal identification for sample collection.

Unfortunately, no. For a paternity test to be considered legally admissible, the alleged father must provide formal identification and complete the required chain-of-custody documentation. This documentation is essential to maintain the integrity of the DNA sample collection process, and to ensure that the test results can be accepted as valid evidence if required.

No, insurance will not pay for DNA testing. Patients may pay with a credit card or cash at the time of testing.

Our paternity tests use throughput capillary electrophoresis via an Applied Biosystems 3730xl Genetic Analyzer.

Yes, but when a known parent is not included, the results may not always be conclusive.

The alleged father must sign a release of information for the biological mother, or any
other party, to receive results.
