A DNA paternity test is an assessment that uses blood group identification of a mother, child, and putative father to establish the probability of paternity. Too put it simply, we all have a unique genetic fingerprint that can be located in two places: our DNA, and the DNA of our children. When a child is conceived, both mother and father transfer a copy of their genetic fingerprint into the child’s DNA. As a result, the child will have observable maternal and paternal information embedded into its DNA that we are able to test and compare with the parents DNA.

How does the test work?
Today, collecting DNA samples for a paternity test is simple and easy. Using a buccal (cheek) swab, skin cells that contain your unique genetic fingerprint are collected through a non-invasive and painless procedure. The swab is a specialized applicator with a sponge, cotton or Dacron tip that is brushed on the inside of the cheek to collect DNA (epithelial cells). Once the data is analyzed, the genetic fingerprint of the putative father is compared with the genetic fingerprint of the child in question in order to determine the biological father.
A DNA paternity test can establish if an alleged male is the child’s biological father with a probability of paternity of 99% or higher.
